What is the Advantage of a Subwoofer?
Subwoofers can be extremely advantageous and can enhance your musical experience by quite a few notches, provided it has been well designed and you are using it correctly.
Similarly, if you aren’t using it the right way, or have bought a sub-standard one- then, your experience will only be downhill. It is important to know how to install subwoofers properly, because almost nine out of ten times it is incorrectly installed, making the users wonder what the hype around subwoofers is all about? You should also know how to choose the correct one. Things like the size of the subwoofer as well as the enclosure are all important.
You would love experience movies as well, with a subwoofer – they would just sound so much better.
So if you’ve finally decided to listen to better music in your car by installing a subwoofer, then the following instructions will turn out to be of great help. Just read along:
1. What are the things that you will need?
- Subwoofer box
- Some speaker wires
- Subwoofer speaker
- A wiring kit, OR 10 Gauge or thicker insulated wire (20 foot) for power, OR 10 Gauge or thicker insulated wire (3 foot) for ground, OR 18 or 16 Gauge, 15-foot wire.
- 4 small screws made of wood
- The in-line fuse which must be 50 amps or higher.
- RCA cables that should be 15 feet or longer. Remember, you will need 2 or one which has both red as well as white.
- Some basic tools
2. Now choose an amplifier and a speaker:
Out here, you need to be more careful. Pay attention to the RMS value, SPL, frequency range, and ohms. For best results, you need an amp as well as a speaker that give out maximum power but don’t blow up the other one.
The RMS of the subwoofer as well as the amplifier has to be close. The RMS is the amount of power that can be continuously sent to the speaker without it getting spoiled. For the amplifier, it is the power it can put out without getting over heated. Also, remember to keep the ohms same for the best results.
3. Working with the wires:
You have to get the power from the battery and not from the fuse box as you will just land up amplifying the noise of the engines through the speaker.
Find an opening in the firewall of the car. It is the metal wall below the hood of the car and close to the windshield. The other side of the firewall can be found inside the car.
Move the cables through the hole in the firewall and keep enough wire so that it can reach the battery. Now remove the insulation from the wire towards the end, where the battery is. Don’t connect the wire to the battery right now.
Pro Tip: Remember to use a tape when working around the fuse so that you don’t get a shock.
4. The wiring part:
Take the stereo head unit out of its place and look at the back. 2 RCA connections must be there. The RCA cables must move through the back of the console in the centre and then be plugged into the 2 connections behind the stereo.
Now you need to work with the remote wires, and there should be one or two blue ones. In case there are two wires, one must be labelled amp. If you have a power antenna, then cut into the blue wire so that it can be used with the amp as well.
5. Now comes the Speaker:
Place the speaker in the box and ensure that the thin gasket is still on it. If there are connectors on the outside of the box, they have to be wired to the speaker as well. Now the speaker has to be screwed into the box and finally, set the subwoofer in the trunk of your car.
6. And in the end…
Now, all that you have to do is wire up the amplifier and connect the power cable to the battery. Place the wire between the battery clip and the post that you can see on the battery. The large fuse must be placed in the fuse holder.
7. Now just enjoy the music!
Once you have followed the above steps, all that you now have to do is test all the connections and enjoy loud music like never before!
